The Act of Singing…

Today, I attended the Vancouver Bach Choir annual Christmas event at the elegant Vancouver Orpheum Theatre.  Christmas with the Bach Choir  is always a splendid affair that generates a festive air of good will to all.  The Bach Choir is a family of several choirs that span the ages from pre-school to retirement.   Every so often, the audience joins with the choirs in singing a carol, which adds more breadth, even if there are some interesting harmonies.

At one point, the conductor said, “The act of singing is our praise for life.”   It was one of those epiphany moments – you know, the kind that make you stop and think.  We listen to people sing, but how often do we sing?  And if we don’t make a habit of singing, how do we give praise for living?  This week, I want to explore the act of singing.

“Life is a song – sing it.  Life is a game – play it. Life is a challenge – meet it.  Life is a dream – realize it. Life is a sacrifice – offer it.  Life is love – enjoy it.”

  1. My son suggests, in unsubtle ways, that I sing far to often for the safety of his ears and mind 😀 Problem is that I don’t know many songs so my singing is repetitious. But I enjoy it. Must have been a wonderful event.

    1. It was a lovely time! And what made it all the more precious was that we sat behind three little boys who turned their programs into spyglasses and numerous other tools to pass the time away. Children give us so much by being just who they are!!!

  2. What a joyous event this must have been. My own experiences of singing, whether at prestigious events, or family parties, or just on my own, have all highlighted to me what an important place this act has in our lives.

    1. Well said! What I realized all of a sudden, yesterday, was that we speak our thanks and laugh our joys, Sometimes I forget that we need to sing our praises. I am so used to speaking that I think it can be a used as a substitution. I let everyone else sing for me, because I think my voice is less important because it can’t hit the high notes and maintain the beat. I agree – there is an “important place this act has in our lives.”

  4. The Bach Choir sounds wonderful. “If we don’t make a habit of singing, how do we give praise for living?” Indeed. I was also very taken with what you said in an earlier reply, “we speak our thanks and laugh our joys. Sometimes I forget that we need to sing our praises.” Beautifully said, what a blessing your words were to me this morning. I don’t sing well (gross understatement) but I certainly love to sing as do my children, particularly praise and worship songs – and of course, Christmas songs. Thanks for the reminder to lift our voices.

    1. I have a feeling that there is a lot of singing going on in your household! Children have an remarkable way of bringing out the joy of the season. I don’t sing that well either – but I rather think that we could liven up any choir!!! There is a Zimbabwe proverb that says: “If you can walk you can dance. If you can talk you can sing!” Thank you for stopping by – love your visits.
