Michel de MontaigneA GatheringThere is a stretch along the Vancouver Seawall where great conversations are held.  The voices, loud and impetuous, are heard from great distances.  But it is only in the winter that we are able to see the participants.  Every day, they gather to discuss the events of the day, their animated caws reverberating across the bare branches.  They are a community that allows for forthright discussions.  And then, in unison, they stretch out their wings and make their way home.

    1. Thank you for joining me in my walk. Vancouver has experienced a huge snowstorm about a week ago and more is on its way. Yesterday, the sun appeared to remind us all that he/she is still in charge. I have always felt a kindred spirit with crows. I admire their adaptability and problem solving skills. Most of all, I find their ability to communicate fascinating. They may disagree – loudly and petulantly – but they remain a community. I am looking forward to the many conversations and adventures awaiting us in 2017. Thank you!!! Many hugs coming your way.

      1. Crows belong to the most intelligent animals and I am therefore convinced they they do no only loudly chat but that they also listen to each other!!I highly enjoy your thought provoking posts💐Thank you Rebecca and I am with pleasure looking forward to 2017.

Great quote and so important in these contentious times where we (proverbial) need to learn to agree to disagree, to undo consensual validation/reality and come to see differences as nothing more than simple a difference. I’ve always enjoyed your posts that stimulate interesting thoughts and conversation. I’m sure I’d love that stretch across Vancouver’s sea wall.     1. Oh Paulette, you would love the Vancouver Seawall, especially Charles Park where our four-legged friends are free to roam and meet up with friends. I agree we need to hone our conversation skill sets. We are a global community. As I enter a New Year, I have set a challenge for myself: to recognize that my voice must reflect a willingness to listen, explore, consider, reflect. Strength is found in a tranquil spirit. We live in difficult times as did those who came before us. Let us press on in the spirit of Helen Keller’s words: “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” Thank you for exemplifying this thought.

  4. I am sure they have a lot of fun along with all their discussions. I think by the sound of their voices, they not only converse, but agree and argue, and of course do a lot of laughing. Love your photos.

    1. I am delighted that you liked the photos. Whenever walkers come close to these trees, they invariably look up. In the summer, the leaves hide the crows, but the winter season all becomes clear. This is one of the crows favorite resting place on their way to their ‘home.”

  5. Beautiful, Rebecca. You should see AND hear them hear. 😀 I will be back in J January – needed a break from this and that. 2016 most certainly did not like us, let’s hope ’17 will be better, we certainly will try. In the meantime a big big hug and a wonderful happy, peaceful and safe Christmas for you and your loved ones, especially your Mom. Will you be celebrating together? Carina

    1. Rest up, dear Carina! You will be in my thoughts over the festive season. May the New Year bring fresh joy and fulfillment. Yes, I will be spending Christmas with my Mom. Sending many hugs and lots of love back across the “blogger miles.” Whenever I see the crows, I think of home. As Henry W. Longfellow once wrote: “Stay, stay at home, my heart, and rest; Home-keeping hearts are happiest.”

In as much as I can but agree with you on the subject of crows, thus to avoid boring with agreement, I shall be disagreeably silent this time round.   7. oh it’s great to hear them chattering! down here we have the grackles and shiny cowbirds, and i was pondering the ‘what if’s’ – what if they were the brilliant colors like tanagers – they would be the darlings of the birding circuit..

    me thinks me might one day do a series, ‘If Black Birds were Colored…’ hmmm, that could also address some serious racial problems we have in this world.

    1. You always make my day brilliant. I enjoy your many beautiful photos of where you live and all of the colour that comes through your creative outflow. Please do a series of the birding circuit – “If Black Birds were Coloured!! Fabulous idea. Humanity is emotionally influenced by colour symbolism. I just happened to come across a quote by Wassily Kandinsky the other day. “The sound of colours is so definite that it would be hard to find anyone who would express bright yellow with base notes, or dark lake with treble.” Felix Navid, my dear friend. Looking forward to the adventures of 2017!!

    1. I am going to enroll in a “Cawing” language course so that I can join the conversation. They seem to understand my language, so it would behoove me to learn theirs!!! Caw, Caw, Caw = thank you. See, how easy it is to learn…
