Celebrating World Photography Day 2018

Photography has changed the way we visualize our lives in retrospective.

A photo holds the story behind the sunrise, the emotions of a wedding day, the hope for a sleeping newborn resting against a mother’s shoulder.

Photography stops time so that we can return again and again to the moment.

This photo, taken many years ago, brings back the ocean breeze that tossed my hair, the bright sunshine that penetrated my sunglasses, the white sand that invaded my sandals, and the delightful companionship of the photographer, who continues to share my life’s journey for over forty years.

May we continue to leave our footprints in the “pixel sands” of time.

    1. Thank you Gallivanta. There is a quote by Sidonie Gabrielle Collette that comes to mind when I view this photo. “”What a wonderful life I’ve had! I only wish I’d realized it sooner.” That is the magic of photos. They allow us to see backwards and realize and celebrate all those extraordinary moments that seemed seemed ordinary. None of us lead ordinary lives! Let continue to live big, bold with a touch of audaciousness.

  4. Thank you for posting this photo from years ago. We recall moments like this often in our mind and enjoy the memory. But, photos give extra color and reality to the experience. We can actually see the place, the smell, feel the sand in our toes and even feel the breeze. Hooray for photos!

    1. How very well said! All five sense become involved in the recollection process. And then there are the details that come through, like the white purse that I carried. I totally forgot about that wonderful white shirt that I wore and wore and wore! And then there was the almost purple hair colouring that caused a mild sensation at work. Those jeans were soon put aside for the next year when I became pregnant. And then, we were on a new, most marvelous adventure.

  5. What a wonderful picture, Rebecca, and the best thing about it was you, enviably beautiful…
    Before I realised it was you, but did wonder, I devoured the glorious hair, the wonderful huge sun glasses- my thing too – the chic white shirt, what looked like the soft white leather bag, and that feeling of the roaring of the sea and rolling breakers, the smell of the salt, the sound of the wind, and that clean pure tumbled white sand… a timeless picture capturing a moment of beauty…with the love of your life-time
    And from an aesthetic point of view, what a lovely palette of white, pale blue, and contrasting shades of your hair and the tree and jeans… a perfect little composition !!!

    1. Thank you so much for your eloquent description – you have a marvelous way with words, Valerie. We have the potential to lead glorious lives. Looking back, I realize it is the decisions that we make that allow us this privilege. While I recognize that we must be an active participate within community, I think our first priority must be to nurture who we are, to make choices that will bring us joy, even though to some our decisions may seem self-serving. In the end, we need to be whole so that we can give back with generosity and gratitude. I love the quote by Joseph Campbell: “We’re not on our journey to save the world but to save ourselves. But in doing that you save the world. The influence of a vital person vitalizes.” Thank you for your lovely comments and for your friendship. Hugs come your way.

    1. Oh Resa – I love that quote “The way it is…the way it was…the way it is…the way it was….” I have placed it on a sticky note on my computer. We limit our concept of time to the finite and yet know, instinctively that there is more. I just read an article that announced that “Scientists have been able to ensure the ultrashort time delay in electron photoemission without using a clock. The discovery has important implications for fundamental research and catty-edge technology.” The more important question goes back to the economic idea of “utility.” How can we get the best use of a specific moment. So while all those researchers are studying time, let us learn to use time wisely – compassion, kindness, hope… Thank you for adding joy to my day. You continue to inspire me…

    1. Thank you so much for your good wishes! Right now, I’m having coffee across from the “photographer” as write these comments. There have been many adventures since that photo was taken and there are more adventures waiting for our arrival. I wore that shirt until it was thread-bear – still can’t find one exactly the same. Which is a reminder that every moment is unique. Thank you for stopping by and for sharing your adventures. Life is simply amazing.
