  1. I’m in. I’ve realised that was has sometimes held me back from Russian literature in the past has been the plodding quality of the translation. So my first task is to find an edition that lights my fire.

    1. There is a great deal of discussion on what translation would be the “best.” That is one of the questions that will be interesting to explore in the coming months. I have chosen Anthony Brigg’s translation and look forward to hearing what others will be using. I am thrilled that you will be joining the party of fellow travelers.

      1. I nearly went for Briggs, but in the end have been seduced by what I read about the updated Maude translation. No going back now. I’ve bought it, all 1308 pages of it. Aaaaagh!

      2. I read some great reviews of the Maude translation. I am fascinated by the Maude’s biography and how they came to know Leo Tolstoy. Looking forward to your thoughts on the translation.

    1. I have never read War and Peace! I confess I know very little of the story beyond the title. It is going to be a year of learning and surprises. Thank you so much for connecting. I look forward to what comes next in 2022!

    1. I am delighted to receive your comments, Jean-Jacques. I agree wholeheartedly – this is an impressive undertaking, one that would not be as easy if I read it alone. Over the past year, we have recognized that virtual connections have invaluable healing properties. Although, I believe that bloggers were ahead of the learning curve on this idea. I am glad that you will be following our blogs and post! Man thanks and Happy New Year.

  11. Bravo, Rebecca, the Tolstoy journey begins. I have an audio version which I will get to in Feb. I am still finishing Testament to Youth by Vera Brittain which was about 45 hours long and then I have two others before I start War and Peace which is 61 hours of listening pleasure.

    1. I am beyond thrilled that you will be joining us on #WarAndPeace2022. February is a perfect time to join us. By the way, I recall seeing a 1979 BBC television drama based on Vera Brittain’s Testament to Youth. The other book that BBC brought to life in 1980 was To Serve Them All My Days. It was 13 episodes and we never missed one of them. Looking forward to a year of amazing books.

      1. I am also looking forward to a great reading year, Rebecca. I saw the BBC television drama but I know I won’t watch it. I didn’t watch a single movie or TV show my entire holiday. I just couldn’t fit it in. I also didn’t try very hard to fit it in, I am always disappointed by movies and have always preferred books even as a teenager.

      2. I am with you, Robbie. I have two miniseries of War and Peace, one that dates back many years with Anthony Hopkins. I have NOT viewed them as I believe that reading the book will offer greater insights. Like you, I don’t try very hard to fit in TV. I have so many books that I want to read that I they must come first!!

  12. Thank you for this introduction and for your kind invitation to join with you and others in the reading of this “long respected” work that has survived decades. I remember the exciting reading together of our first Russian novel and am looking forward to a further vision of life in Russia. A chapter a day for almost a year! ! ! An exciting year, for sure!

  13. After I read it several times, this book became a part of my life memories, and I watched many versions made as movies or TV series. Thank you, all three mighty women, to bring up those days back to me. 🙏🤗🥰💖🙏

  15. You guys are so cool and exciting.
    I will be by here and there!
    I am still catching up on last year..LOL!
    Other things have popped into my life, as well.
    I told Norm about this reading project. He thinks it is so cool, and seemed envious of my invite.
    Norm read…NOT! Every once in awhile I do read a book to him/us.
    Seems when I get a minute, or an hour, I just want to work on my new Art Gown, or drawings. Wait ’til you see RB in her 1920’s outfit, cloche hat and all!
    This is very exciting. I will be around for part of the experience.

    1. I just finished the first 5 chapters and I was thinking of your art gowns, Resa. They would be perfect for Anna Pavlovna’s evening gathering. “With a gentle rustle of her white ball gown trimmed with ivy and moss, with her glistening white shoulders, glossy hair and sparkling diamonds, she moved between the men as they stepped aside to make way for her.” I felt that you were there with me! I can hardly was to see RB in her 1920s outfit, cloche hat and all! By the way January 15 is National Hat Day! Sending hugs back at full speed.
